Research Profile

Research interests include the comparative morphology and systematics of primitive dicotyledons and monocotyledons, comparative studies of pollen grains of living and fossil primitive angiosperms, evolutionary phytogeography of the flowering plants, and general classification and phylogeny of angiosperm families. After initial study of the large tropical family Annonaceae, research interests broadened to include comparative studies, especially of the pollen, of the approximately two dozen families in the magnolialean complex, which constitutes the group of living flowering plants generally considered to be the most primitive of extant angiosperms. Interests turned to investigation using scanning and transmission electron microscopy of the earliest known fossil angiosperm pollen grains from rocks of the Lower Cretaceous. Recently, an increasing interest in studies of the pollen of primitive lilialean monocotyledons, and the classification, phylogeny and evolutionary phytogeography of monocotyledons in general.

Research Profile

Research seeks to understand processes generating and maintaining biological diversity in a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by humans. Research in the lab spans the species, community and landscape levels and focuses on the impacts of urbanization on animals. Rapid urbanization is one of the greatest challenges facing conservation biology, with many cities growing in area faster than in population. In addition, the highly managed nature of a city landscape provides biologists with some unique opportunities to understand both the role of humans in altering patterns of biological diversity and the role of behavior in limiting animal distributions. A guiding research principle is that the typical indices of urbanization, such as human population density, describe only a portion of the habitat structure that is important for wildlife. Human behaviors, values, and resource consumption levels can influence the habitat and resource availability for birds and other organisms.

Research Profile

Dr. Whiteley conducts conservation genetics research primarily on fishes. His research program uses a cross-disciplinary, integrative approach to address fundamental questions in conservation genetics as well as evolutionary biology and ecology. He combines evolutionary genomics, molecular population genetics, quantitative genetics, capture-mark-recapture analysis, field and lab-based experiments, and computational approaches, with particular interests in using basic research to inform management and conservation efforts.
